The car is not started - how to jump start a car in 2019

the battery is not god

I decided to write this post because there are already several clients who have called me for the same subject. When the vehicle or car is off, the car battery is discharged or the next day, the car does not start (do not turn the starter motor and the needles of the board go crazy, the relays strike and take off quickly, typical symptom of low battery)

Why does not the car start?

preguntas y mas preguntas al clienteFirst, always dialogue with the client to be able to go deeper into "the car does not start" and when I see that the battery is the problem, I consult a little more .. for example; ¿How long have you not used it?, ¿what are the usual routes?, ¿if you have not forgotten any lights on?, which is what the vehicle does when it tries to start it, how long ago it changed the battery, among other questions.

Case Example:

Once in dialogue with the client, I will see the vehicle. The car is a Citroen C3 year 2011.

the car is citroen C3, its a good car

First step: I grab the key and try to open with the remote control and it does not work, the first symptom of a discharged battery.

- Second step: I open with the key and I get ready to start it. I turn the key giving it a start and it is heard .. the car is not starter.. "Trrrrrrrrrrr" "tac tac tac" (relays that lock and others that stick and take off); the orange light of the speedometer turns on and off quickly; typical battery symptoms discharged .. and obviously the starter did not try to turn, very low voltage / insufficient amperage.

- Third step: I'm going to look at the engine compartment, where the battery is to look a little

the battery if it does not have good connections and very wet days are prone to sulfation ..
probably in two or three weeks that it had been covered corrosion / sulfate generating battery discharge.

sulfation in the new battery

Finally, the customer is warned about this issue and proceeds to eliminate the sulfate, sand the terminals and leave it optimal for proper operation.

¿How to clean the sulfation in the battery?

in the video we can see how to clean the terminals of the sulfated battery

We verify the battery voltage with the multimeter; and yes, the voltage gives 7v .. which, the battery is very discharged ... (if we do not remember how to do the measurement, see here).
The first thing we do is to make a bridge (previously reviewing the user manual by looking at the manufacturer's recommendations ..).

¿How to jump start the car?

Learn with 4 simple steps in this 2019 to make a bridge correctly (remember to use jumper cable, since they are thick and if they do not melt) do the following:

1.- The recommended is to connect the positive cable of the battery that does not work, with the positive terminal with the battery that works.

2.- the negative wire (black or ground) connect it first in the battery that works and then we go to the vehicle that does not start and place it in the leg of the motor or a good point of mass (this is what the manufacturers recommend, see image below).

3.- With the car on we leave a few minutes to charge the battery of the other vehicle (if possible, measure it with a multimeter).

4.- Disconnect in the opposite direction to the connection, that is, first the black wire (or ground of the vehicle that does not work, then remove the black wire from the vehicle that is running and then do the same with the red wire (or positive).

After making a bridge, is the car battery problem solved?

Of course not, this was a step to see if the battery was discharged because they forgot the lights on (that is, had consumption with the engine stopped)

And we saw that when making a bridge, the battery was still in the same state ... (more symptoms that the problem was there
..

We make a measurement with the multimeter and the 12.45v mark; anyone would guess that the problem is the car and it is not the battery .. but no, remember that the battery must have voltage and amperage! And in this case, we had voltage .. but the amperage ???

To ensure that our diagnosis, another battery was connected to the car that did not work, it was started and .. prrrrrrmmmmmmmmmm It started perfectly. Ready! The problem was found !!

By the doubts and so that the client remains safe, the battery was removed and it was subjected to slow charge during 24hs, but it continued without activating itself.

The battery has been shorted (in truth, the cells are those that are shorted) so the vehicle will not start even if the battery is charged or bridged ...

New battery, problem solved!
